TheBlithedaleRomanceisthestoryoffourprincipalcharacterswhoworkwith--andsometimesagainst--eachotheronBlithedale,acommunalfarmantecedenttothosethatspranguplaterinthe1960s,andsimilartooneonwhichHawthornehimselflivedin1841.ThesecommunesaroseoutofthepressuresonsocietyandtheindividualbroughtbytheIndustrialRevolution.Somewereorganizedaroundreligiousphilosophies,someweresecular.Amongthesecularists,theTranscendentalmovementmentionedinthenovelespousedtheideathattheindividual'sintuition,ratherthanreligiousdogma,wasthetruepathtospiritualenlightenment.Ourfourcharacters,likesomanywhofledtothesecommunes,struggletofreemankindfrombondageastheystrugglewiththeunaccustomedday-to-daytasksoffarmlife.Buttheyareplaguedbyamysterythatfollowsthemfromtheworld,andultimatelyleadstotragedy.
