"TheOpenBoat"isashortstorybyAmericanauthorStephenCrane(1871–1900).Firstpublishedin1897,itwasbasedonCrane'sexperienceofsurvivingashipwreckoffthecoastofFloridaearlierthatyearwhiletravelingtoCubatoworkasanewspapercorrespondent.Cranewasstrandedatseaforthirtyhourswhenhisship,theSSCommodore,sankafterhittingasandbar.Heandthreeothermenwereforcedtonavigatetheirwaytoshoreinasmallboat;oneofthemen,anoilernamedBillieHiggins,drownedaftertheboatoverturned.Crane'spersonalaccountoftheshipwreckandthemen'ssurvival,titled"StephenCrane'sOwnStory",wasfirstpublishedafewdaysafterhisrescue.
