BookerTaliaferroWashington(1856-1915)wasbornintoslavery.AftertheCivilWarheobtainedabasiceducationwhileworkingasacoalminerandotherjobs.Aftermanydifficulties,hestudiedatHamptonInstituteinVirginia(1872-1875).HebecameaninstructoratHamptonandin1881wasaskedtostartaNegronormalschoolatTuskegee,Alabama.HestartedTuskegeeInstitutewithoneinstructor,himself,and30studentsinborrowedquarters.Later,theschoolwasmovedjustoutsidethetowntoanoldplantationwereitremainstothisday.ManyoftheearlybuildingsatTuskegeewerebuiltbythestudents.Notonlydidthispreservelimitedfundsbutitalsohelpedthestudentstolearnatrade.ThisispartofAmericanHistory,thatallstudentsshouldknow.--Thistextreferstoanoutofprintorunavailableeditionofthistitle.
