OurJourneytoSinaibyAgnesBenslyisthestoryofavisittoSaintCatherine'sbyagroupofBritishscholarsinthe1890's,whoweredrawnthereinquestofmanuscriptsfromearlyChristiantimes.Thegrouphadoneparticularprizeintheirsights.ItwasasecondcenturytranslationoftheGospelsfromGreekintoanAramaicdialectcalledSyriac.Thiswasararefindindeed.Oneofthegroup,AgnesSmithLewis,anaccomplishedlinguist,hadbeentothemonasteryoncebefore.Onthatvisit,shehadspotteda“palimpsestofmostvenerableappearance,”apalimpsestbeingaparchment(leather)pagedbook,whichhadbeenusedtowriteonattwodifferenttimes,thefirstsetofwritinghavingbeenpartiallyscrapedofftheparchmentbeforeitwasreused.AgnesSmithLewishadrecognizedthehiddenunderwritinginthisbooktobeinSyriac,“thenativelanguageofOurLordandHisdisciples.”Andnow,theexcitedgrouphaddecidedtorevisitSaintCatherine's,inhopesofcopyingandreadingtheancienttext.TheirtripisvividlydescribedbyAgnesBensly--bustlingCairo;atentandcamelcrossingofthedesertwithBedouinguides;themonksandmonasterylife;abreathtakingclimbup3000stonestepstothetopofMountSinai,andwhattheyfoundinthemysteriousmanuscripttheyhadcomesofartosee.
