ThreeSistersisanaturalisticplayaboutthedecayoftheprivilegedclassinRussiaandthesearchformeaninginthemodernworld.ItdescribesthelivesandaspirationsoftheProzorovfamily,thethreesisters(Olga,Masha,andIrina)andtheirbrotherAndrei.Theyareafamilydissatisfiedandfrustratedwiththeirpresentexistence.ThesistersarerefinedandculturedyoungwomenwhogrewupinurbanMoscow;howeverforthepastelevenyearstheyhavebeenlivinginasmallprovincialtown.Moscowisamajorsymbolicelement:thesistersarealwaysdreamingofitandconstantlyexpresstheirdesiretoreturn.TheyidentifyMoscowwiththeirhappiness,andthustothemitrepresentstheperfectlife.HoweverastheplaydevelopsMoscownevermaterializesandtheyallseetheirdreamsrecedefurtherandfurther.Meaningneverpresentsitselfandtheyareforcedtoseekitoutforthemselves.
