SarahMorganDawsonwasayoungwomanof20livinginBatonRouge,Louisiana,whenshebeganthisdiary.TheAmericanCivilWarwasraging.Thoughatfirsttheconflictseemedfaraway,itwouldeventuallybebroughthometoherinverypersonalterms.Herfamily'sloyaltiesweredivided.Sarah'sfather,thoughhedisapprovedofsecession,declaredfortheSouthwhenLouisianalefttheUnion.Hereldestbrother,whobecamethefamilypatriarchwhenhisfatherdiedin1861,wasfortheUnion,thoughherefusedtotakeuparmsagainsthisfellowSoutherners.Thefamilyownedslaves,someofwhomarementionedbynameinthisdiary.SarahwasdevotedtotheConfederacy,andwatchedwithsorrowandindignationitsdemise.Herdiary,writtenfromMarch1862toJune1865,discoursesontopicsasnormalashouseholdroutinesandromanticintriguestothoseasunsettlingasconcernforherbrotherswhofoughtinthewar.Largelyself-taught,shedescribesinclearandinvitingprose,fleeingBatonRougeduringabombardment,sufferingapainfulspinalinjurywhenadequatemedicalhelpwasunavailable,thelootingofherhomebyNorthernsoldiers,thehumiliationoflifeunderGeneralButlerinNewOrleans,anddealingwithprivationsanddisplacementinaregiontornbywar.Shewasachildofhertimeandplace.Herinabilitytoseethecrueltyandindignityofslaverygratesharshlyonthemodernear.RegardlessofhowonefeelsabouttheLostCause,however,Sarah'sdiaryprovidesavaluablehistoricalperspectiveonlifebehindthelinesofthisbitterconflict.
