TheBluebirdBooksisaseriesofnovelspopularwithteenagegirlsinthe1910sand1920s.TheserieswasbegunbyL.FrankBaumusinghisEdithVanDynepseudonym,thencontinuedbyatleastthreeothers,allusingthesamepseudonym.Baumwrotethefirstfourbooksintheseries,possiblywithhelpfromhisson,HarryNealBaum,onthethird.Thebooksareconcernedwithadolescentgirldetectives—aconceptBaumhadexperimentedwithearlier,inTheDaringTwins(1911)andPhoebeDaring(1912).TheBluebirdseriesbeganwithMaryLouise,originallywrittenasatributetoBaum’sfavoritesister,MaryLouiseBaumBrewster.Baum’spublisher,Reilly&Britton,rejectedthatmanuscript,apparentlyjudgingtheheroinetooindependent.Baumwroteanewversionofthebook;theoriginalmanuscriptislost.
