TarzanoftheApesisBurroughs’exciting,ifimprobable,storyofanEnglishlord,leftbythedeathofhisstrandedparentsinthehandsofamotherlyAfricanapewhoraiseshimasherown.Althoughheisawarethatheisdifferentfromtheapesofhistribe,whoareneitherwhitenorhairless,heneverthelessregardsthemashis“people.”Whenolder,larger,strongerapesdecidethatheanundesirabletobekilledorexpelledfromthetribe,itisfortunatethatTarzanhaslearnedtheuseofprimitiveweapons.Althoughsmallandweakbyapestandards,Tarzanisahumanofgod-likestrengthandagilitytomenwhodiscoverhim.Bystudyingthesepeople,hegraduallydecidesheisnotanapeatall,buthuman.AndwhenhemeetsJane,abeautifulAmericangirlmaroonedwithherfatherandfriendsonthehostilecoastofAfrica,Tarzanconceivesloveforher.WhentheyareunexpectedlyrescuedbeforeTarzancanfindawaytorevealhisfeelingstoJane,hedeterminestobecomecivilizedandfollowherintotheworldofpeople–tofindherandwedher,thoughhemustcrosscontinentsandoceans,andcompetewithtwoothersuitorsforherhand.Thisstorywasthesubjectofasuccessfulfilmin1932,withTarzanbeingplayedbyJohnnyWeissmuller,whoactedinafurtherelevenTarzanfilms.AccordingtoWeissmullerinaninterviewwithMikeDouglas,hisfamousape-callwasaudiostitchedtogetherfromasoprano,analto,andahog-caller!
