DouglasWilliamJerrold(1803-1857)wasthesonofanactormanager.AftersometimeintheNavyandasanapprenticeprinterhebecameaplaywrightandlaterajournalist.HewasacontemporaryandfriendofCharlesDickens.AsajournalistheworkedforPunchmagazineinwhichMrsCaudle’sCurtainLectureswereserialised,tobepublishedinbookformin1846.JobCaudle,the‘hero’ofthebookisaVictorianshopkeeperwhosewifefindsshecanonlytalktohimwithoutinterruptioninbed.Caudle,whooutliveshiswife,findshecannolongersleepeasilybecauseofhismemoryofthese‘lectures’andresolvestoexorcisehiswife’smemorybyrecordingthelectures,itseemswithaviewtofuturepublicationfortheedificationofothers.Jerrold’shumourshinesthroughthisinsightintoVictorianmiddleclassculture.
